HREA’s Distance Learning Program was launched in 2001 in response to a large-scale global survey among human rights defenders, educators and humanitarian and development workers which indicted a huge need for more (specialized) training opportunities in remote or hard to reach areas.
Since then HREA offered almost 500 self-directed and instructor-led courses in which over 10,500 human rights defenders and humanitarian workers from 130 countries successfully participated.
Most courses are offered through as part of open enrollment courses on our Human Rights Campus.
Partnerships and collaboration
HREA also offers courses in collaboration with institutional partners. These partners include the Inter-Agency Standing Committee, Child-to-Child Trust, the Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe Network (DARE), Gmedia Center/OMCT, Penal Reform International, the Plan Academy (Plan International), Secretariat of the Pacific Community, UNICEF, University for Peace, and War Child Holland, among others. These collaborative courses, both instructor-led or self-directed, usually have a regional or national focus and may target specific groups such as humanitarian workers, human rights defenders, campaign coordinators, national Ombudsman offices, secondary school teachers, journalists, judges and law enforcement officials.
Alumni of HREA’s on-line courses stay connected to one another through alumni networks including Communities of Practice, “refresher” courses and webinars on HREA’s Human Rights Campus.
